So there's this story that I've been working on lately. I've written tons of snippets, side stories, and notes for it. I've spent time obsessing, researching, and perfecting. You'd think that, with all the work I've put into it, I might get some money from it some day. Wrong.
My work does not completely belong to me. Why? Because the universe in which it's set belongs to Gene Roddenberry and CBS. That's right, it's a Star Trek fanfiction!
However, unlike most fanfiction, this one is going to be huge. About the size of an actual book. And the crazy part? All of the characters are original.
At this point, you're probably shouting at your screen in frustration at my stupid choices. Why would I relinquish almost all of my creative rights and write about a universe that already exists when I could just as easily create my own?
Because it's a challenge.
I'm being forced to write within the bounds of a pre-written universe. This means that I have to adhere to the laws of nature and heavily research everything. It means that, even though all the characters are original and I'm creating an entirely new species and planet, I have to do things like look up the appropriate uniform for their era, observe proper Starfleet conduct, and make sure that I know the starship's floor plan.
A lot of work is going into this and a lot of work will continue to go into this, and I'm probably never going to get paid (unless they want to buy the story off me). I know this, and I'm fine with it. Sure, it would be nice to see some cash flow from a published book, but that's not really the point of writing. Honestly, I'd be happy if just one person read it. As long as a single person finds themselves enjoying the story, if it opens them to new ideas or viewpoints, even just a little, then my work has paid off.
Plus, if it ends up being a hit, pieces of it may just worm its way into Canon! Did you know that Uhura's first name was created by William Rotsler, an avid Star Trek fan who wrote Star Trek II Biographies, a licensed Star Trek novel (basically a glorified fanfic)? Gene Rodenberry and Nichelle Nichols liked the name, so it was adopted as canon. However, Nyota Uhura's name was never mentioned in the Star Trek movies or show until the 2009 film, taking place in the Alternate Reality.
<takes breaths/>
Whew! Did not mean to geek out so much there. What was I saying?
Oh yeah!
So I'm making this super cool, super long Star Trek fanfic that will probably never make me any money, but I'm totally fine with that and I hope that you guys will read it someday.
Phew.
Logging out. Live long and prosper.

Compromise
Work records were a mess today. I was scrambling back and forth remembering what I did, retrieving sheets covered with math, and furiously trying to get the dates straight. This was all done with the aid of an iPhone to connect my two very tense parents.
I finally got everything straight and Mom came by to pick up the records on her way to take Alena to school. Then, before she left, she noticed something.
"Rahel." She said, stopping in the doorway and looking the sheet over. "You didn't write the right date."
I froze. "What?" I said stiffly, willing the panic to not creep into my voice. It came anyway.
"Yeah," She continued. "You put down Thursday. 1/3/13 to 1/4/13. This is for two days."
"Yes," I said, more harshly then I had intended. "It's for two day's work. That's what you wanted, wasn't it?" The panic was definitely seeping in now. I had filled out 2 other sheets, each for a week of work, before she called up and said that she needed one that detailed only what I had done at my Dad's. I prayed that she didn't say that she needed the whole week but with different dates. Alena was probably already running late.
"No." She said. My heart took a plummet.
"I need this to be Monday through Friday." She continued.
I pushed myself up and moved over to survey the damage. "You want the whole week?" I asked fearfully. "Well, maybe we can use the one I already filled out??" I thought.
"No." She said. "I need what you did at your Dad's house this week."
It was then that I broke down. I didn't even have a good reason for it. I was just confused. Mom hugged me and I sternly told my body to stand up straight and stop being ridiculous. I only got a little "I can't." from it. Ordinarily, I'd just let my body do it's thing and sob out it's stress levels for a couple minuets. This was not an option, however. There were people right there and the work records had to be finished.
"Aww." I heard Dad say behind me. "Come here."
That snapped me out of it a bit. I straightened up and wiped my eyes a bit.
"No." I managed to say clearly.
"No?" He asked, slightly bemused.
"No, I don't like hugs." I said.
"Oh. Okay." He said in an amused sort of voice.
"Inner Spock." I thought. I regained control and was able to find out why the work record needed to be fixed. It turns out that it needs to be marked Monday to Friday, even if it's only for Thursday and Friday's work. Huzzah.
Anyway, I soon regained full composure and drank some coffee. Thank the goddess for Leonard Nimoy and Star Trek fanfiction. I warned my body and emotions against being irrational. Then I stopped. "Irrational?" I thought.
Huh.
What was the difference between rationality and logic??
I have decided that rationality is the act of applying logic and that logic itself is a system of thought. So really, we shouldn't say "Be logical" because that would imply that we are creatures capable of being entirely based upon logic. The command "Be rational," on the other hand, is quite different. It implies that we are creatures who are able to adhere to logic. This is a better statement for a being that is so versatile. It speaks of choice and willpower. Our ability to adapt.
It speaks of compromise.

News came out about Benedict Cumberbatch's (uber hot) character in Star Trek: Into Darkness!!
...It wasn't very fulfilling.
"When J.J. described the role [of Khan] to me… he described someone who was, in movie terms, a mixture of Hannibal Lecter, Jack in 'The Shining,' and the Joker in Batman, he's someone who has enormous physical strength. He's someone who is incredibly dangerous, both as a physical entity and through the use of various technologies and weapons and who performs acts of what I would describe as terrorism. He's also a psychological master. He manipulates the minds of those around him to do his bidding in a very, very subtle way." -Benedict CumberbatchOoookay. He sounds epic. ...But who is he? Sorry Benedict, but you haven't told us much. How 'bout we ask Mr. Abrams, hmm?
"His name is John Harrison and he is sort of an... average guy who works in an organization called Starfleet and he turns against the group because he has got this backstory and this kind of amazing secret agenda. After two very violent attacks, one in London and one in the US, our characters have to go after this guy and apprehend him. And it is a far more complicated and difficult thing then they ever anticipated. 'Into Darkness' is very much about how intense it gets and really what they are up against." -J.J. AbramsThat... Is very interesting, but still tells us nothing. C'mon guys. It's just a simple question! IS HE KHAN?? IS HE?? If not, THEN WHO IS HE??? GOOD GODDESS, WE NEED TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!
I guess I'll just have to wait until it comes out, as if I were a patient person or something. ]=[

What Is This Sorcery?!?
As many of you may have noticed, I got a Twitter!
It is utterly bizarre. I think I like it, though...
It's for all the weird crap that's too short or random to put on here, so if you want more of that stuff, please visit! Thanks. =}
www.twitter.com/SpaceMaster9000
While you're on there, check out Steven Moffat and George Takei's twitters. They are bloody hilarious.
Oh! That reminds me. I may also need a Tumblr. I think I've found my people. =D

Coffee Brain pt1
[WARNING! Raw stream of consciousness run on coffee. You have been warned.]
DUDE. You could assign a different note for every key on your keyboard, so that when you type, it makes cool music. WAIT. Then everyone would know what you're typing. IT COULD BE USED TO SEND MESSAGES!!! Awesome.
I don't have Village People on my iPod!!
...That is NOT COOL.
I also need more Queen. Listening to 'Pressure' over and over again ain't cutting it. (Even if it DOES have Bowie. That's pretty darn epic.)
DANCING IN THE STREETS!!
'Nuff said.
I woke up at 6:30, drank two cups of coffee, and studied for tomorrow's CHSPE!!
COFFE COFFE COFFE COFFE.
Don't drink coffee, kids.
Brains are awesome.
I should get a Twitter!! =D
My laptop fried. It overheated. I miss her. T_T
HEDWIG IS DEAD!!!!

My essay about drug abuse and social norms
This is an essay that I wrote for school today. I'm actually pretty darn pleased with my communication skills, considering that it only took me a couple minuets. I was so pleased, that I thought that I should share it with you guys! =)
I hope that you find this fascinating (Eehheh. Pardon my Spockish speech patterns. I've been on a TOS (Star Trek The Original Series) kick lately... XD) and/or informative! =^^=
People always face many obstacles and challenges, and people in their teenage stage are most certainly no exception. We are constantly battling and contradicting ourselves as we go through many stressful changes to become adults. This obstacle comes to mind:
Conformity and adaptation to social norms
As social beings, we must change and adapt to fit in, and be accepted in a social group. However, many of us don’t want to change or even fit in. We are afraid to lose ourselves in the public’s identity and instead strive to create our own identities. This is usually a good thing, as creative and pro-active people are necessary for change. However, it is only a good thing when taken into a healthy moderation. Those who stand out too much will have to deal with hardships, accusations, and the public’s disapproval. Some people just aren’t strong enough or ready to deal with this aspect, and can develop a very strong rebel attitude (which is really beneficial to no one) and sometimes even self-loathing.
On the other hand, others will actively try to blend in with the social norms of their peers. Such people find it comforting to be in a group where no one stands out, and rules are already laid out for them. While this is a good survival technique, the unfortunate aspect is that there is no individuality and people in a peer group will actively try and become more like those around them even if their peers are unhealthy.
Take the abuse of drugs for an example. If drug abuse is the social norm for some one's peer group, one can bet that this person will at least experiment in drug use, if not become fully addicted.
Homer has created a very frank view of addiction and the abuse of consumables with his story of the Lotus Eaters, who were people addicted to eating Lotus blooms to the point of forgetting everything around them. When the story’s protagonist, Odysseus, and his men encounter these people, the people come up and offer some Lotus blooms. Odysseus is wary and instructs his men to not take them, but a few disobey and eat them anyway. These people very quickly join the others and ‘zone out’, forgetting their mission and those around them to just eat the blooms. It is my assumption that drug abuse must have been prevalent even in those days, and was a reference in Homer’s story. Whether or not this assumption is correct doesn’t really matter to us. The message is still clear. No matter what our peers pressure us to do, always trust in one’s own logic and go with the healthiest option.

Do I like Kirk or do I like Picard?
I have come to a very painful crossroads in my life. I was browsing for clips of Star Trek (original series) on youtube when I came across a video with Data and Spock having a conversation about being human. I fell in love. I watched more clips, falling head over heels for The Next Generation with each click. How could this be happening? My heart belonged to the oldies! I loved the cheesy affects, the silly hairdoos, the bad acting. The paper mache! And yet I was enamored with the effects, the acting, the characters!! Even Spock, dear Spock whom I have followed doggedly, hanging on to every word every stoic look, for seasons! Even he paled (if that was possible) when compared to Data's purity and freedom of mind!
I'm not even going to get into Kirk vs. Picard, a frightening concept for Geeks and Nerds everywhere.
Maybe I could watch them both. Maybe it doesn't matter. They can both have my love, can't they? Although what if my love strayed from the original to TNG? I can't leave it in the dust, after all we've been through together.
Where has my love gone? I feel like a traitor. A backstabber. How could my heart change so quickly? It is madness but then, when has love ever been sane?
Am I willing to betray my Geek heritage and wade into unknown waters, leaving behind the Star Trek I loved in favor of this new copy? You don't even know exactly who will die on a planet's surface based solely on the color of their shirt! Do I want a love like that?
I'm not quite sure.

I am learning to speak in Klingon!!
Behold! My first word. 'Qapla.' I means 'Success.' (not relating to a specific success. It's more like "Go and succeed.") I credit Full Frontal Nerdity in teaching it to me. I have been reading it, and it is one of the most epic comic strips in all history. It NEVER gets old. Check it out. http://nodwick.humor.gamespy.com/ffn/index.php?date=2001-11-29
Learning the Klingon language has been on my 'Path to Supreme Geek' list since I was 12, although I have only JUST got around to it. (Yes, I do have such a list. Unfortunately, it was before I discovered Google Docs, so I wrote it on paper and lost it. ><)
I thought that learning this language is vital to all Geek and Nerd development. (and the art of whipping out really great insults.) So here are some great links to free sites that teach Klingonese! =D
